Life is a Compromise- An Interior Design Concession

September 26, 2013

Life is a compromise right?  Life has a way of constantly reminding us that we have no control over everything.  And in these situations where things don't turn out how we envision them we must compromise and make the  best out of a not so ideal situation.  The compromise I'm alluding to today has to do when my husband arrived home with this-

It's not terrible, but its huge, expensive (at least for what I would have paid for it) and not in the style of our home at all.  He really "must have it in his library" and well, we choose our battles and I just had no energy for this one.  My way of compromising?  "Ok, fine but I choose the plant and it will be a fiddle leaf fig tree".  So, dearest friends and readers I will at some point be the owner of my very first fiddle leaf fig tree!  And I am actually thinking the beautifully large green leaves could look beautiful kind of alright inside this thing.

Yes?  What do you think?  Will I survive?  Any major interior design concessions you have had to make?  Do tell, misery loves company.

Oh and if you are wondering- No he does not read the blog.

  1. funny girl. I love that urn actually and a FLF will look fabulous in it. Tip: let it dry out totally between waterings and don't soak it! My husband does not shop thank god, or I can only imagine what he'd bring home. My surprises are enough for him!

  2. Yes girl, you won this one! No one will notice the planter with your new baby inside of it! Those trees are so amazing! I'm so jealous. The planter isn't that bad.... It is a nice color.

  3. This is great - but I actually see a fig tree looking great in there! A few years after I met the fiance we went to the Flea market in Brooklyn and I fell in love with this vintage lamp with purple variations and gold, it scared him to death! I didn't get it but since we have lived together we have had many compromises especially since we have such a small space!

  4. Ha! I was wondering that! Sometimes I post project intentions in hopes that he might feel the pressure, like I do, to keep the project moving forward:) I think you can make good of this! Just stare at it a long time! Thats what I have to do:)! Good luck

  6. So funny, I bet it ends up super chic and once the plant fills it up you will love it...and hopefully share it! At least it wasn't a neon budweiser bar sign or a lazyboy recliner...just sayin':)

  7. I think it will be great, too! I'm beyond thankful that my husband doesn't bring anything home, because it would be scary!

  8. haha men are so funny when they buy random things like this. i actually posted on a kinda similar topic today regarding designing for men/women. we both must have 'compromise' on the mind! (though i'd much rather decorate 100% the way i like haha.)

  9. I feel you. We are currently in the process of re-decorating our office/den and I would love to keep a theme going of white on dark with clean lines....girly chic. He is a part-time DJ/producer and absolutely has to have his huge obnoxious speakers on the desk along with his sound board...oh and just came up with the idea of hanging some old school records....

  13. I'm living with a "lovely" brown sofa that I inherited from his bachelor days. I'd trade that for a pot any day ;)

  15. Haha - I SO feel you on this! My fiance and I just moved in together and it's been...interesting...to combine our things. He tried to bring in his kegerator. No kidding. That definitely didn't stay!

  16. I heart a fiddle leaf. I always look for them at estate sales when they line all of the outdoor plants and pots up to sell. Is that weird?

  17. Bless his heart! He doesn't ask for much. Color is good. Fiddle leaf is on point! Will be great.

  18. Lol this is too funny, this is what I'm dealing with right now. I have a vision for our new place, my husband doesn't care for style only comfort and makes it EXTREMELY difficult to decorate around that sometimes. I feel your pain!

  20. It's true. It could be worse. Maybe you can tuck it behind an end table? That way he gets the planter but all you see is your gorgeous new tree!

  21. I think it will be fine. My husband would never bring anything home. Thank goodness. It would actually be pretty outside. Can't wait to see how this works out.

  24. Your husband buys things? Is this a bizarro universe?

Love the urn but would be pissed that someone stepped on my decorating toes AND spent money on it. Grrr. But, I actually think it could be great.
