Pearls are back [ or they will be ]

May 14, 2013

I can't wait to see the Great Gatsby.  I think it has to do with a few of my favorite things- Leo, Art Deco, lavish parties, champagne, and jewelry (and more specifically pearls!).  In the 1920s the style was to wear long strands of pearls and so from the images I have seen the movie is filled with beautiful pearl pieces.  I think nowadays pearls are thought of as too classic in style for some, but I think this will start to change as jewelers adapt pearls into more modern designs and they get more press (like the Great Gatsby movie!).  Plus prices for pearls are currently very good making it easier for them to make it to the mainstream.

When I think of pearls, the first person that comes to mind is Coco Chanel who used to love her pearls and rarely be caught without them.  Here are a few of my favorite images of her sporting pearls.

She was so chic at any age!  I pulled a few pearl pieces that I have been loving lately.

There you have it- some chic and modernized pearls.  I have always been a pearl earring kind of a girl.  Literally, I wear them everyday.  I change them out for evening outings in favor of more exciting earrings, and once in a while for the day, as well, but I just think that I look so much prettier with my pearls.  Its as if I feel my face is brighter with them.  Maybe they are my security blanket?

How do you feel about pearls?

  7. I do think they have that effect (brightening your face), I don't wear mine very much but when I do, people tell me that! Love those top earrings!

  8. So funny. Same here! I also always wear my pearl studs, either my white ones or my yellow pearls. Even though I try to switch to other earrings, even simple diamond studs, I always go back to my pearls. For some reason they make my face look better.

  11. Oooh, Gatsby is absolutely everything you want it to be!! I promise! Leo is about as dreamy as ever! Did you see the photos of Carey wearing those Tiffany's bracelet/rings on the cover of Vogue this month?! She also wears them in the film - so gorgeous. I just die over all the jewelry from the film!

  12. Great photos, Albertina! I love pearls (pretty much all I ever wear are my pearl studs). Gatsby is one of my favorite books. I still haven't managed to see the movie yet, but I can't wait.

  14. I come from a line of ladies who didn't wear them and didn't necessarily care for them, but I've always personally loved them! I think they once represented something out of reach for my grandparents and the notion sort of got handed down. Today, there are some good representations of the real thing out there. I spotted a pair of clamshell earrings (with a pearl!) just yesterday at C. Wonder that I added to my wish list in fact.

    Very pretty post Albertina!

  17. You're right, there are some seriously beautiful pearl pieces in the movie! I do love pearls, mostly in a very simple way (a ring, simple earrings) but also in costume jewelry, like the pieces you found above. Still a little hesitant on pearl necklaces but I hope that changes - I got a beautiful strand for graduation a few years ago and they need some wear!

  19. I love pearls, but they can feel a little stuffy. My aunt created a jewelry line, Love Tokens, where the pearls are not just strung along, and I love how boho and current it makes them look. I am on board, let's bring back the pearl! xo

  20. First off - you MUST see the film! You will loooooooooooove! As for pearls, well...I have always been a little afraid of them, to tell you the truth. My style is classy, but not classic and I have never felt that I could quite pull them off. But I would be open to trying on a more modern style of pearls, if not just for size ;) XO Brynn

  21. I am so excited for Gatsby, too! 20s style is so fabulous - I love all the fresh takes on the pearl popping up these days. I have a great pair of pearl and pink stone Kate Spade earrings that bring that 20s style into my wardrobe.
