Decorating Above the Headboard

October 09, 2013

I'm sure like me you have all noticed how headboards have been getting taller and larger. Some taking up almost the entire wall behind the bed.  I love this trend and the fact that the headboards have such intricate shapes just make the bedroom all the more interesting.  But how do you decorate above your headboard if your headboard is not that tall?  We got our headboard back in 2005 when this was not trend. So ours is regular sized, although it seems short in comparison to today's standards.  But I have no plans on switching it out.  I really adore it. And it was one of those decorating splurges we made when we got married- an investment piece if you will. I have been thinking about this for a while....what am I going to do with all that space above the bed?  If you remember from past posts....this is my headboard now (you can't see it in its entirety but you can see that it's low)-

So, what are the options to decorate above the headboard that I have been considering?  Here are some ideas- mirrors (the starburst mirror seems to be a favorite lately), one largescale work of art, several similar works of art, a gallery wall comprised of completely different pieces, a simple sconce, a statement sconce, a fabulous screen...really there are many options that would be ideal.  Here is some inspiration for you-

Does that extra space above your headboard bother you at all? what do you have hanging over your head?

  1. You are right, your headboard is wonderful, don't ever get rid of it. That is a hard space to fill - I think either a mirror or some type of off balance gallery wall? This is the first time I've ever been glad my headboard is in front of a window because this is a hard decision. :)

  2. Alber, maybe consider a gallery of your beautiful photography Of scenery from your trips to Spain. It would look beautiful and add some story

  3. Thank you for this! I am constantly wondering what I can put behind a headboard without making it look stuffy or forced, this is beautiful inspiration! And typically I wouldn't gravitate towards berry hued walls, but that 3rd bedroom is just fantastic.

  7. I love that gallery wall above that one bed. I have a cute banner over mine, but I'd love to get a pit more interesting eventually!

  8. That space drives me insane! My problem is that I don't feel comfortable sleeping with something hanging on the wall, but then I don't like the all bare look! That's why I need a headboard to begin with, to cover some space ;)

  9. Oh gosh, I'd love to put something above our headboard. I've thought about it a million times and I think some art would be great. We just don't have a ton of room so until we have taller ceilings, I may leave it blank....or even put curtains on the entire wall. xoxo

  10. I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do in my new room as well. I typically lean toward some sort of collection of frames or one large piece of art. I do sometimes worry about earthquakes in California though, so the thought of a tapestry did cross my mind.

  11. i always loved the look of something above my head, but after being a little kid with shelves above my bed that came crashing down in a earthquake, i am always so worried. so i just made a huge headboard. i found a cool ikea light that i am going to hang above it.

  15. When I was in my more modern phase I think I would have been fine keeping it simple. Now, it really does bother me. I really love the photo with the blue wall and gallery!

  16. Loving all of your inspiration images! Our headboard is large + detailed like you mentioned so I haven't really thought about filling that space because there isn't any! I love the idea of doing artwork though!

  18. I can totally relate to this dilemma! I still have yet to fully decide on a solution! I would love to make a canopy with curtain panels but my fan is the way :/ I will probably end up just going with a large piece of art. I can't wait to see what you end up going with!

  19. Oh this are great ideas! My son has a modern slab bed with no headboard and I have been trying to decide on what to put up there! This gets me thinking! Love all these examples. Great idea for a post

  20. You have such an interesting headboard with the fabric and the shape, I wouldn't go too crazy above it and take attention away from it's beauty. I like the idea of something round above it because of it's shape. Although those white sconces are killer, they could totally rock out that space and I know how much you love them.

  21. I wish my headboard was shorter. I have some of the Pink Pagoda prints over my headboard, but the gallery art looks amazing. Do that.

  22. I diy-ed my headboard and chose to do a tall tufted one, so I don t need something above it. I need something on the sides, though!
At my parents' house they had a trophy wall (antlers, I mean!) above the bed, so I am more than ok with antlers above my bed. Actually, I have some in the bedroom, around the tv. Your choices are beautiful, I adore sunburst mirrors, maybe because I crave one!:)
