It's reveal day for The One Room Challenge!! Oh you know, just one of the funnest days in blogland if you like interior design. If you don't know about I'm talking about, here is the rundown- Linda from Calling it Home began this challenge some years ago where she invites 20 interior design bloggers to transform a room in 6 weeks and report about their progress every Wednesday and today is the 6th week in this season, aka reveal day. I have participated in the One Room Challenge a few times (as an invited participant for the family room and my closet, and as a linker for my daughter's room and the mudroom ). This time around I'm beyond excited because Christine Dovey, one of my all time favorite interior designers used one of my prints from my 'Everyday Faces' series for her project!! She used it in her playroom and I can't wait to show you what it looks like. Take a look-
Loving this feminine and bright dining room created by Living Pink, a Spanish Interior Design Firm. You may remember this design group from another post I did here. Their designs are fun and interesting and always have that feminine feel. The dining table was designed by Patricia Bustos from Living Pink and, in my opinion, it steals the show alongside the Sputnik style pendant, which is delicate and whimsical and softens the space alongside the table's pink base. You might remember that I love folding screens and I'm in love with this lucite and gold one separating the dining room from the living room. It creates privacy while not covering up any light. Brilliant. Let's see more-
My daughter now has a true walk-in closet with the cutest cherry wallpaper. You may remember my original plan for her closet here. One of the things that changed from the original plan is the mirror. My good friend Karen suggested that I use a Venetian mirror on top of her chest of drawers instead. And the more I think about it the more I love the idea. Venetian mirrors are richly designed and have plenty of etched details that would be perfect for a little girl. They are elegant, feminine, romantic and can really soften up a space.
I'm so excited to share these photos with you today. The designers behind this amazing home are my very talented friends Julie Lloyd and Clair Tompkins. They recently started Tompkins Lloyd Interiors and this is one of their latest projects, one which I had the privilege to photograph! So, of course I had to share it with you. These two ladies make quite a pair. Julie's taste is exquisite and timeless and Clair's aesthetic is edgier and more contemporary and they blend together to create chic, modern, rich and luxurious interiors. They also source the best vintage pieces around. I literally wanted every single piece of furniture in this home.

I'm so excited to share this new art find with you all today. I came across these beautiful floral photographs by Ashley Woodson Bailey on Pinterest and I just had to share. She has a fabulous collection of highly saturated photos with really amazing colors. She sells them in different sizes (the largest being 40x60), which is perfect depending on your decorating needs. I think my chartreuse colored powder bathroom could benefit from a large scale print of one of these flowers. The combination of colors, scale and composition really brings the flowers to life. The works so powerful and exciting. You have to see all of them here, but be careful you are going to want one asap!
Life is a compromise right? Life has a way of constantly reminding us that we have no control over everything. And in these situations where things don't turn out how we envision them we must compromise and make the best out of a not so ideal situation. The compromise I'm alluding to today has to do when my husband arrived home with this-
Happy Monday!! I trust all your weekends were fabulous. Mine really was so much fun. The combination of weddings and good friends really is special. But I am glad to be back home where the temperature is much warmer. So, to set you off right this Monday morning I want to share with you my latest lighting obsession.
When we visit friend's homes its usually for a party, a dinner, a function, to, pick-up or drop-off. We get a general sense of the space, whether we like it or not but if you stop and think back there are many details you can't recall about it. Why did I like her home so much? It's really when you have it in your head to really analyze a space that you can understand why you like it or dislike it in some cases. Same thing happens when I look at interior decor magazines. I may love a room immediately, but is usually after some analysis that I realize why I like it (maybe its because of the color palette chosen, or because of the combination of textures.....). In this post I will try and identify different sources of inspiration that caught my attention and that I would like to file away as a lesson learned for any future decorating or designing projects....if anything to make my own home more beautiful.
The powder bathroom to me is one of the most important rooms in a home. It is the room where you can let lose and add adventurous and unexpected elements. The powder bath is where I always like to have an element of surprise. My previous powder bathroom had red/deep pink high-gloss walls and ceiling. Friends were quite shocked when they opened the door from the unassuming hallway to this little gem of a room. Now, I have high-gloss turquoise....also fun but not as dramatic. My next powder bath will be showing off its personality through its wallpaper for sure.
There are so many beautiful wallpaper options out there waiting to be used in creative ways.....I'm wondering what kind of a powder room personality would you have? Wallpaper is fun, adds drama, and can definitely make a statement.
One of the design trends I'm noting and absolutely loving is the move from regular looking kitchen's to GLAM ones....and by this I mean kitchens that may not at first view look like a kitchen. They are sleeker, shinier, and yes more glamorous. And what screens 'glamour' ....why mirrors of course!!....and even though I have seen mirrors in kitchens pop up in years past I think there is renewed interest. Mirrored tiles my friends- this is today's take away. Love it, dig it, need it!
Not sure what it is but my husband and I are obsessed with grey as of late. Ever since I showed him this photo he wants his library lacquered in grey and we even thought grey floors would be divine. Maybe its because our home now is so colorful and we need a more muted palette in our next digs. I have enjoyed every pop of color, every wild wall color, and cushions in fun flashy colors but when I daydream of my next home I imagine it all grey variations.
Grey is such an elegant yet warm color. It feels cozy and relaxed yet keeps things a little formal formal. Yup, so grey floors are my latest obsession. (it was difficult to find good images with the grey I have in mind....the first three are the best examples, of course they are from the same spread!)
Ok! Back to regular programming here on Mimosa Lane! And to start off the year with a BANG i have this DIY chandelier. I still cannot believe I constructed a chandy all by myself! I mean I stripped wires, wired sockets....things I had no idea about. A while back I posted on my love of Lindsey Adelman's chandeliers. Here are some photos so you can remember what I'm taking about:
Interesting how a photo on pinterest (the one above) can take you down the rabbit's hole. And I'm so glad I took the little scenic side trip because it lead me to this fabulous designer, Greg Natale. I'm attracted to his use of patterns (note the tile in the bathrooms almost seems like wall paper) and his mix of colors. The kitchen is pretty cool too with those amazing pantry doors (or are they refrigerator doors? I see a vent at the bottom so they could be). Don't get me started on the stair handrail.
Powerful, dramatic, colorful....How much personality do they infuse in a room? A LOT!! The drama comes from the poses for sure, the color from their beautiful embroidered outfits, and the power from the act of fighting the bull. But really all this is magnified by the size of the prints. They work so well in this supersized format. I have no idea who the photographers are of these pieces, but I will investigate. (I think the second image may not be a photo but an actual torero suit...but the drama effect is what I'm after...and that purple!!)
The home of a talented friend of mine, Paloma Cañizares, came out in a recent Spain edition of Architectural Digest. I visited this beautiful home two years ago and fell instantly in love with it. Not only is it located in one of the best parts of Madrid but the bones of the apartment are magnificent. Paloma's highly trained aesthetic created this perfectly curated space where she is the artist in many instances (she painted the large painting behind the sofa in the living room, as well as the walls in the dining room and master bedroom). She also has furniture and home accessories of her own design throughout. She and her husband love scouring flea markets (they frequent the ones in Paris particularly) to find interesting pieces. Let's tour shall we.
Thank you, thank you all yesterday for your support, encouragement and enthusiasm. You have no idea how much it means to me! I will keep you posted as to how the little venture goes.
Today I want to talk about Coat of Arms and how elegant and sophisticated they are. I love them now and believe it or not I have been in love them since I was maybe 13? Around that age I got my first blazer (you know the kind with gold buttons) and all I could think about was getting ahold of a coat of arms to put in the breast pocket. It took a while to find the right one, but wao I felt so cool and yes sophisticated. I love how meaningful they are with every little detail in the rendering representing something specific to a family, person or region.
Mixing and matching all kinds of fabrics and prints is in vogue, no doubt. We have beautiful ideas from Jamie Meares (I'm specifically thinking of something like this) and Emily Henderson (who made some awesome tutorials of the best way to mix here). I highly admire these two ladies and their fabulous style. But I think the pendulum might start swinging back to the other direction- the "matchy, matchy" direction where you have walls, curtains, furniture, pillows all covered with the same fabric. I'm not sure, but as people struggle to get a unique look for their home they will tend to move in the opposite direction of what is currently trending. Just a theory.
As I grapple with the balance of finding design inspiration in magazines and online and making it my own I go back to a WSJ article that I read not too long ago about interior designers and their mentors. This article starts off with Albert Hadley, who mentored Bunny Williams, who mentored Miles Redd who then mentored Nick Olsen where the lineage ends (in the article at least!). It was interesting to read about what they learned from each other. I can imagine the tension between the aesthetic influence they are under and the battle to make their own mark and style. A battle of wonderful inspiration that comes in so many shapes and sizes and transforming into something new, different, and unique that stands on its own.
I have been obsessed with dining room lighting options for the last few weeks trying to find the perfect lighting situation for our future dining room. It all started in this post when I fell in love with Adelman's beautiful chandeliers. The Serge Mouille chandelier above is what makes this room have major personality.
Hi Beauties! As you all know my love affair with books and libraries in this blog I want to talk about using sconces in libraries. We had them in our first apartment right when we got married and I fell in love with the look. They are elegant and classic and brighten up any book shelf. Here I tried to find a variety of bookcases with different types of sconces. (I actually had a few more beautiful photos but I could not get their original sources. Its so difficult sometimes and I hate putting pinterest as my source).
